GETTING TO FORT MYERS BEACH
Airports
- Fort Myers airport (RSW) is our closest airport. About 20 miles from the Beach. The airport website lists all the major Car Rental companies, On-demand taxis (MBA Transport 239-482-2777; current rate to the Beach is $50), and other transportation. Most major airlines fly to RSW.
- Many guests use the discount airline Allegiant Air into Punta Gorda airport (PGD). It is about 35 mile / 1 hour drive to the Beach. Most major rental car companies operate from PGD.
- Other possible airports:
- Fort Lauderdale FLL (140 miles; 2.5 hours)
- Tampa TPA (155 miles; 3 hours)
- Orlando MCO (200 miles; 4 hrs)
- Miami MIA (155 miles; 3 hours)
- West Palm Beach PBI (142 miles; 3 hours)
- If you are ever in the unfortunate position of having your flight cancelled; then sometimes it is better to reschedule to one of the above airports and rent a car, than to have to wait several days for the next flight to Fort Myers RSW
Auto-Train
- Some guests have used the Amtrak overnight auto-train between Sanford (Orlando, FL) and Lorton (Washington, VA)
By Road
- From the South, I-75 junction 128 Alico Road; or junction 131 Daniels Parkway
- From the North, I-75 junction 136 Colonial Blvd; or junction 131 Daniels Pkwy
- From any of these junctions, you need to find your way to Summerlin Rd and then to San Carlos Blvd
- There are many ways to get to San Carlos Blvd, but San Carlos is the main access to Fort Myers Beach
- San Carlos is a dual carriageway in both directions until it reaches the traffic light junction with Buttonwood, just before Matanzas Bridge on to Fort Myers Beach (Estero Island). At this point the roads become single lane, so the traffic can be slow along San Carlos and on to the Beach
- Please note that the traffic light at Buttonwood alternates for each lane. So the traffic along San Carlos will move independently for each lane. I suggest that you pick one lane and stick with it; and not keep changing lanes.
- Also the police do hide behind the hedge at Buttonwood, so do not be tempted to jump the red light, and start your vacation with a ticket! Similarly on Matanzas Bridge, do not be tempted to use the bus lane as the police do occasionally watch for people turning early.
- If the traffic is likely to be heavy, you might prefer to complete your shopping at one of the supermarkets off-island, so as to not have to endure the slow traffic twice.
SUPERMARKETS / PHARMACIES
There are several big supermarkets about 3 miles off Fort Myers Beach (and all have pharmacies); but generally on your route to the Beach. You might want to look up the exact locations on their websites (the zip code for Fort Myers Beach is 33931). Many guests shop before coming onto Fort Myers Beach to avoid a second journey in case the traffic is heavy.
- Walmart Superstore, at Summerlin Square, 17105 San Carlos Blvd, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931. This is on the way to the Beach from the airport; and is where one route of the Fort Myers Beach trolley ends
- Publix is nearby at 16950 San Carlos Blvd, Fort Myers, FL 33908, diagonally across the road junction from Walmart; there are many Publix in Fort Myers including one on Fort Myers Beach
- There is a Publix on the Beach about 3 miles away at 4791 Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931 and the Beach Trolley stops outside (but traffic can be heavy along Estero Blvd especially on weekends)
- Target superstore at 15880 San Carlos Blvd #101, Fort Myers, FL 33908; about 1 mile further north on San Carlos from Walmart / Publix near Summerlin Square
- Costco is at 7171 Cypress Lake Dr, Fort Myers, FL 33907 which can be on your route from the airport to the beach via I-75 junction 131 and Daniels Pkwy
- WholeFoods is at 6891 Daniels Pkwy #100, Fort Myers, FL 33966 and can also be on your way from the airport via I-75 junction 131 and Daniels Pkwy

- Beach Trolley operated by LeeTran is Route 400 from the Park n Ride by Walmart Superstore, 17105 San Carlos Blvd through to Lovers Key State Park. Cost is $0.75c (but no change given) about every 20-30 mins from about 5am to 10pm
- Free Beach Tram runs about every 15 mins from 8am to 11pm between Bowditch Point and Fort Myers Beach Library
LOCAL RESTAURANTS
- For a great list of restaurants on Fort Myers Beach, try Trip Advisor – Fort Myers Beach Restaurants
- Also the local News-press newspaper has listed its favorite restaurants for:
- Fort Myers – 28 best restaurants 2020
- Cape Coral – 27 best restaurants 2020
- But not yet seen a list for Fort Myers Beach
- We have enjoyed or had good references to:
- The Yucatan Beach Stand – right next to the S.O.B (Smokin Oyster Brewery) – both are popular but more mass market
- Above Matanzas Restaurant is Petey’sUpper Deck with great pizza, beer and views of the back bay (we watched several dolphins last time). Mantazas downstairs has good seafood and great seating inside and out overlooking the back bay.
- Nervous Nellies is right next door to Mantanzas with great seafood and bayfront seating
- I have had good recommendations to The Beached Whale ; though the last time I went, all the seafood was deep fried – so more mass market.
- Doc Ford’s (previously The Bridge) has had great food at good price and right on the water
- Next door to Doc Fords is Dixie Fish Co which has great seafood. When I first went there in 2000, you sat on upturned crates and had fresh shrimp straight off the boats. It is a little more upscale now!
- Parrot Key which is right on the back bay; part of Salty Sam’s Marina; has been doing double lobster tail specials on Sundays.
- Fresh Catch Bistro if you love seafood
- Also Bayfront Bistro – just behind the Estero Island Publix Supermarket (so about 3 miles down Fort Myers Beach) has good seafood and other items with great seating indoors or out overlooking the back bay
- Love Boat Ice Cream – simply the best home made ice cream ever! 16475 San Carlos Blvd, Fort Myers, FL 33908; tel: (239) 466-7707 11:00am – 10:00pm Daily – and there are often long queues!!
- Bonita Bill’s, 702 Fisherman’s Wharf, San Carlos Island, FL 33931; 239-463-6119; is a great place for breakfast. Very down to earth and on the back bay, but better than queuing at Waffle House. They also have a very limited lunch/dinner menu. And every year on the Saturday before July4th is their Annual Kid’s Fishing Tournament – and every kid gets a prize!
- Mom’s Restaurant – Fresh home made cooking for breakfast, sandwiches, cakes and pies; 2450 Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach, FL, United States, 239-209-0707
GOLF
- The Fort Myers / Lee County region is one of the golf capitals of the USA. It has some of the highest numbers of golf courses per capita with well over 100 courses to choose from. My eldest son plays occasionally and recommends TeeOff.com as a great app to review, find and book tee times (Fort Myers Beach zip code = 33931). Courses vary from the very short such as Myerlee to some of his favorites such as Eagle Ridge. Some guests have booked Golf Passes through the South Florida PGA
